NBA stats are fun. The NBA is fun. Putting them together is a blast and thanks to stats.NBA, doing that is easier than ever. The league tracks almost everything you’d want to know. These stats range from helpful and resourceful numbers to interesting tidbits you didn’t think you needed to know.

I’ve recently dug through the stats database and found some eye-opening figures as we reach the halfway mark of the 2021-22 NBA season. Without further intro-ing, let’s take a look at some crazy stats.

1. Fred Vanvleet tops the league in minutes with 38.1 per game

If someone walked down to the Toronto bench and pulled off Nick Nurse’s mask and revealed him to be Tom Thibodeau, you shouldn’t be surprised. Rest assured, there’s no Scooby Doo-style trickery going on in Canada. Nurse is just playing his starters a whole lot.

Three Raptors sit in the top six spots of the minutes per game leaderboard, with Fred Vanvleet logging a head-turning 38.1 per night. The last player to average over 38 minutes for a season was James Harden in 2015-16. The last Raptors player to do so was DeMar DeRozan in 2013-14.

No one is going to give coach Nurse a hard time for that, as not only is VanVleet clearly the best option in Toronto, he’s having the best season of his career. The guard is not only a likely All-Star, he is cruising towards All-NBA votes.

Unless the Raptors bring in a veteran playmaker at the deadline or he suffers an unfortunate injury, VanVleet will likely top all players in minutes played. If that doesn’t signal that it’s officially his team now, I don’t know what else does.

2. Shai Gilegeous-Alexander tops the NBA with 24.4 drives per game

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is leading the league in drives, and it’s not particularly close. The Oklahoma City standout is averaging 24.4 drives per game. In a distant second place is Luka Doncic at 20.6

Why he’s driving so much is simple – he’s fantastic at it. The guard is making 47.7 percent of his attempts that come off his attacks. His drives account for 13.3 of 23.0 points per game average.

He also uses that as a way to set up his teammates, passing out of the drive 40.8 percent of the time. His assist totals (currently 5.5 per night) would likely be much higher if the Thunder surrounded him with more talented shooters.

Speaking of drive-and-kick scenarios, the Nets are incredible in that refard. Joe Harris leads the league in three-point makes off catch-and-shoot looks (2.7). In second place? Patty Mills (2.6).

When James Harden, Kevin Durant, and/or Kyrie Irving drive into the lane, they have a pair of elite kick-out options. Given how much those three demand double and even triple teams, this stat makes complete sense. Harris and Mills are almost always open on the perimeter and have the sweet stroke needed to down their shots.

Trae Young leads the league in two tracking stats: average seconds per touch (8.8) and dribbles per touch (5.6). While impressive, it’s not overly surprising for a few reasons.

First, he’s the team’s obvious first scoring option and is a marvel with the ball in his hands. They’d be foolish not to let him run the show.

Almost every time, stats like these would not be considered a positive. If you look at them without any other context, you might think Trae is a ball hog. That couldn’t be further from the truth, as the guard once again ranks among the league leaders in assists.

He’s dribbling the air out of the ball in Atlanta, and why wouldn’t he?

Jaren Jackson has been great this season and Memphis has been great this season. Perhaps the only flaw in his breakout campaign has been his frequent fouling. The fourth-year forward leads all players with 164 personal fouls – 3.4 per game.

He’s fouled out of two games and finished with five personals in nine others. There’s not a whole lot of analysis to be had here, but you have to wonder if teams can exploit that come playoff season. The big man is so talented that you’d hate to see him sitting on the bench of a postseason contest because of foul trouble.
